Le Gwo Ka est un style musical originaire de la Guadeloupe. Principalement joué avec des tambours appelés "ka", les chants et la danse, font également partie intégrante de son identité.

Revisité dès 1969 par le musicien Gérard Lockel, il prend la forme du Gwo Ka Modèn, et ajoute à sa composition des cuivres, de la guitare, mais également un gamme précise qui doit être respecté.

C'est à cette histoire que rend hommage le projet "Lockel & Gwo-Ka Modèn Explorations", une musique-symbole nationale, outil de décolonisation de la pensée musicale à travers une musique modale et atonale basée sur la science, le swing et le sentiment musical du gwo-ka traditionnel.

Porté par le pianiste Ruddy Boa, élève de Laurent Coq et directeur artistique de la chanteuse Körinn Pierre-Fanfan, le projet explore une sélection de compositions, de textes et de discours de Gérard Lockel sur les sept rythmes du gwo-ka.

Le pianiste a réarrangé et harmonisé cette matière musicale en y apportant des modifications du tempo, de formes et de mélodies sans jamais sacrifier l’essence de l'œuvre originale.

Entouré des meilleurs représentants de la musique caribéenne, dont un des maîtres du Gwo-ka Sonny Troupé, la femme griot Körinn Pierre-Fanfan et le percussionniste Arlet Feuillard, ce projet rend un vibrant hommage à Gérard Lockel disparu en septembre 2023.

Gwo Ka is a musical style originating from Guadeloupe. Primarily played with drums called 'ka,' singing and dancing are also integral parts of its identity.

Revisited in 1969 by musician Gérard Lockel, it evolved into Gwo Ka Modèn, incorporating brass instruments, guitar, and a specific scale that must be respected.

The project 'Lockel & Gwo-Ka Modèn Explorations' pays tribute to this history. It is a national symbol of music and a tool for decolonizing musical thought through modal and atonal music based on science, swing, and the musical sentiment of traditional gwo-ka.

Led by pianist Ruddy Boa, a student of Laurent Coq and artistic director of singer Körinn Pierre-Fanfan, the project explores a selection of compositions, texts, and speeches by Gérard Lockel on the seven rhythms of gwo-ka.

The pianist has rearranged and harmonized this musical material, modifying tempo, forms, and melodies without ever sacrificing the essence of the original work.

Surrounded by some of the best representatives of Caribbean music, including one of the masters of Gwo-ka, Sonny Troupé, griot singer Körinn Pierre-Fanfan, and percussionist Arlet Feuillard, this project is a vibrant tribute to Gérard Lockel, who passed away in September 2023.
